SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – A proposal to demolish Frank's Chevrolet and build a new chapel for the Salvation Army is one step closer to fruition.

The Sleepy Hollow Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday approving several site variances. The project will return to the Sleepy Hollow Planning Board for site approval.

The Salvation Army wants to tear down its chapel in Tarrytown and build a 15,000-square-foot building on the site of the former car dealership in Sleepy Hollow. The new building would also increase the number of classrooms and multipurpose spaces. Parking would be built on the site of the existing chapel.

The zoning board had to approve several variances, including a reduced number of parking spaces. Officials said the project did not need the required number of spaces because 60 to 70 percent of the Salvation Army's patrons live within walking distance.

Zoning board members approved the proposal with the condition that the organization should hire a parking attendant to stack parking during heavily attended events.

Salvation Army officials also need approval from Tarrytown before demolition can begin. The proposal has yet to be brought before the Tarrytown Planning Board.
