"We've been bombarded with voters," she said.

McDonough's district, which includes the Kendal-on-Hudson retirement community and the Sleepy Hollow Manor neighborhood, had cast more than 380 votes by Tuesday afternoon. Poll workers at the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department headquarters said they had also seen large numbers and expected even more after people got off work at 5 p.m.

"We've had steady turnout all day," Sue Currie said.

Nunzio Raimo III, a poll worker at Philipsburg Manor, said more than 700 ballots had been cast by Tuesday afternoon at all the districts located at the polling place. He credited the presidential election for the strong turnout.

"There's no doubt," he said. "It's because of the significance of the national elections."

McDonough reported issues with people not filling out their ballots correctly. She said poll workers had to re-issue several ballots because people would mark outside the circle or pick the wrong candidate.

"People don't know how to mark the ballots," she said.
