TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Holiday shoppers will have reason to celebrate this month in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow: Parking will soon be free in many high-traffic areas.
Both villages will institute bagged parking meters in December in downtown business districts. The move is designed to draw in more shopping dollars during the holiday season.
Sleepy Hollow's holiday parking rules will begin Dec. 17 and last until Jan. 2. Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said all business districts will be covered, including Beekman Avenue, Valley Street, Cortlandt Street and Route 9.
Tarrytown trustees will approve holiday parking during their Monday night meeting. Village Administrator Michael Blau is recommending free parking from Dec. 7 to Dec. 26 in municipal lots and the downtown business district street parking.
Free parking would not be available on South Broadway south of West Elizabeth Street, Central Avenue west of North Washington Street and meters near the Tarrytown Train Station.
A few Tarrytown trustees noted recurring problems with the holiday parking during a recent work session.
“They should enforce the two-hour limit,” trustee Douglas Zollo said.
Blau said the village would enforce the two-hour time limits on parking.
