Family Disagreement To Blame For Wife Owing $46K In Taxes, Latimer Says

RYE, N.Y. -- George Latimer, the Democratic candidate for Westchester county executive, said a family disagreement is to blame for a home owned by his wife owing more than $46,000 in back taxes to the City of Rye.

Latimer's mother-in-law Alice Phelps passed away in 2012, and since then his wife's family has disagreed with how to settle her estate, located at 60 Roosevelt Avenue, Latimer said. The property was deeded from Alice Phelps to Robin Phelps-Latimer in Aug. 2010, according to Lohud.

Latimer, a state senator who lives in Rye, said his wife's family plans to pay back the $46,009 owed in school, city and county taxes, once they come to final agreement.

"These things can go on for families for a long time," Latimer said. "There's been no effort to avoid payment. It will come with a completion of a settlement."

Latimer, who is challenging Republican County Executive Rob Astorino, said he is not directly involved with the situation, calling it a personal matter.

"The Astorino campaign decided to go down in the gutter and bring personal things up," Latimer said. "Their campaign is getting nervous. Our campaign must be getting through to people."

Jessica Proud, a spokesman for Astorino, said Latimer is being a hypocrite.

“Albany politician households get no special treatment, Mr. Latimer," Proud said. "Pay your taxes -- and stop blaming your wife.”

In 2014, a Senate Democratic spokesman criticized Joe Dillon, who was running against Latimer for State Senate, for facing foreclosure and having two tax liens filed against him.
