TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – The Tappan Zee Bridge needs mass transit, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday while appearing on John Gambling's radio show.

"Not to put mass transit on the bridge is a terrible mistake, I don't care what it costs," Bloomberg said, as reported by Capital New York . "Mass transit is our future."

Bloomberg also noted the region's future is dependent on transportation.

"People don't understand that the jobs of the future, the tax base of the future, these are all dependent on us having businesses here," said Bloomberg this morning, during his regular Friday appearance on John Gambling's radio show. "Businesses need transportation, in and out, they need places to land helicopters, they need mass transit to move employees, they need tunnels and bridges that aren't choked with cars to move goods and services by truck."

The new $3.1 billion Tappan Zee Bridge will not preclude mass transit, state officials have said. Construction plans call for the bridge to be ready to implement a mass-transit system when it opens, but officials say adding a system during construction would be too costly.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has convened a mass-transit task force to examine the i-87/I-287 corridor this year.
