Woman Dies After Jumping From Tappan Zee Bridge

Update 7:05 p.m.: TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — A Connecticut woman who jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge at about 5 p.m. Wednesday was declared dead at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow at about 5:40 p.m., State Police Investigator Joseph Becerra said.

The woman's name was being withheld pending notification of her family.

The woman stopped her car and began climbing onto the fence on the northbound side of the New York State Thruway about a quarter of a mile onto the bridge, Becerra said. Several motorists tried to talk her down before she jumped but were unsuccessful, he said.

Nyack firefighters pulled the woman out of the water and took her to the Tarrytown Boat Club, where emergency responders performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

Original story: TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — A woman jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge during rush hour late Wednesday afternoon, police said. Her condition was not known, officials said.

The woman jumped just before 5 p.m. and was rescued from the Hudson River at about 5:15 p.m., Tarrytown Fire Chief Eugene Gasparre confirmed. Firefighters pulled the victim onto a boat and transported her to land, he said.

She was taken to an area hospital, he said. Gasparre would not confirm whether the woman was alive or dead.

Also responding to the scene were the Tarrytown Fire Department, Tarrytown police, Irvington Fire Department, Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and police, New York State Police, Greenburgh paramedics, Westchester County police and a fire department from Rockland County.

The bridge was not closed to traffic.

A Rockland County man jumped off the bridge in June and survived. Police stopped a Yonkers woman from jumping in June and talked a New Rochelle man to safety in May. But in April, a Mount Vernon man jumped to his death from the Tappan Zee.
