At about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, members of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office observed a vehicle that had been broadcast as a suspect vehicle in a grand larceny case that occurred in Dutchess. Sheriff's officers attempted to stop the vehicle, a gray 2016 Ford Explorer driven by two men from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the area of the Route 9W and Route 199 in the Town of Ulster.
With authorities from multiple agencies in pursuit, the SUV fled south on Route 209 before exiting onto Enterprise Drive and then returning to Route 209 traveling south in the northbound lanes, then exiting onto Route 28 traveling east in the westbound lane, before striking a parked vehicle on Route 28 in front of Kingston Nissan, authorities said.
The SUV continued onto Washington Avenue with a flat tire and eventually stopped on Washington Avenue just west of Hurley Avenue in the City of Kingston.
The driver, Darryl Dixon Jr., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was taken into custody immediately. The passenger, Devada Hines, ran from the vehicle south between the Bank of America building and the Reis Group insurance building, authorities said. Hines was then unintentionally and accidentally struck by an Ulster County Sheriff's Office vehicle in the parking lot of Bank of America. He was transported Kingston Hospital and then Westchester Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The SUV was a rental vehicle displaying a stolen NYS license plate. Dixon, 30, was charged with the following:
- Reckless endangerment in the first degree, a Class D felony
- •Criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a Class E felony (multiple counts)
- Tampering with physical evidence, a Class E felony
- Unlawfully fleeing a police officer, a Class A misdemeanor
- Resisting arrest, a lassC A misdemeanor
- Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor
- Reckless driving, a misdemeanor
- Leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident
- Multiple traffic violations
Hines, 29, was charged with:
- Tampering with physical evidence, a Class E felony
- Criminal possession of stolen property, a Class E felony
- Resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor
The investigation is ongoing and further charges are likely, the Ulster County Sheriff's office said.
Deputies were assisted by Kingston Police, the New York State Police and the Town of Ulster Police.
