WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Westchester County residents may notice an increase in the presence of law enforcement personnel over the holiday weekend, as counter-terrorism efforts are stepped up around Passover and Easter, according to a release from Irvington Police Chief and Chair of Counter Terrorism Zone 3, Michael Cerone.

Counter Terrorism Zone 3, which includes Westchester and Putnam Counties, is one of 16 counter-terrorism zones in the state of New York.

The "holiday taskings" are comprised of law enforcement officers conducting periodic security checks of religious facilities, train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls and public parks where holiday events might be held, according to the release.

Cerone assured the public that there is no new threat to the public's safety. The increased law enforcement presence is part of the regular counter-terrorism strategy.

Cerone also asks the public to follow the suggestion, "If you see something, say something."

If you see someone whose behavior "does not match the usual pattern of activity found within our daily lives," Cerone recommends following these steps:

  • Do not confront the individual
  • Do not reveal your suspicious to the individual
  • Record as many details as possible
  • Notify local police by calling 911

Counter Terrorism Zone 3 is vice-chaired by Rye Brook Chief of Police Gregory Austin, Dobbs Ferry Chief of Police Betsy Gelardi and Bedford Chief of Police William Hayes.
