WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – State and local law enforcement agencies are stepping up their presence for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles says statewide DWI checkpoints will be in effect between July 3 and 8 to deter drunk-driving. Police will be cracking down on motorists who drive over the blood-alcohol content level of .08 and those who drive while impaired by drugs.

Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone, Chairman of the New York State Counter Terrorism Zone 3, said residents can also expect to see an increased police presence in public places such as train stations, shopping malls and public parks, between :July 3 and July 8.

“During the upcoming July 4th, Observance period, we need to remember the recent events that occurred during the Boston Marathon, unfortunately a sad reminder, that we still need to remain vigilant & diligent in our duties, never forgetting, that terrorism, foreign or domestic, is a part of today’s world,” Cerone said. “A factor in our daily lives today. The Boston Marathon is proof enough that terrorism can reach many venues in America.”

Cerone noted that the increased patrols do not mean that there is a renewed safety threat; it is only a counter-terrorism measure. Residents who see something suspicious should call 9-1-1 or their local law enforcement agency.
