Pronounced dead by a village Emergency Management Services medic at the scene of the 7:18 a.m. crash were Rolando Oliveros, 20, and his passenger, Omar Ayala, 17, both of New Rochelle.

The families of both the driver and passenger were notified, according to Mamaroneck Sgt. Charles Lanza, who said that speed was determined to be a factor in the fatal collision between Oliveros' 2005 Acura and a privately-owned garbage truck.

Police said that the Acura collided into the side of the garbage truck, which appeared to be turning into a parking lot at Mamaroneck High School at 1000 W. Boston Post Road.

Boston Post Road was shut down in both directions between Richbell Road and Rockland Avenue until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday while Mamaroneck and Westchester County police investigated the collision.

A stretch of Route 1 between Richbell Road and Rockland Avenue was closed for nearly eight hours as crews cleared wreckage and village and county police investigated the crash scene.

The driver of the garbage carting truck, whose identity has not been released by police, was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center for an evaluation.

An active investigation is being conducted by the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department with the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Accident Investigation Unit as well as the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office.
