Police on the New York State Thruway Authority plan to begin “Operation Hang Up” on Monday, with additional patrols continuing through April 28 to target distracted drivers.

“Cell phone use and texting are responsible for a significant proportion of traffic crashes, injuries and deaths, and these behaviors continue to increase despite their obvious danger,” according to the New York State Police.

NYS Police Troop T issued 4,664 tickets for cell phone violations in 2012.

State officials say reminders will be posted throughout the New York State Thruway during the campaign.
