New Crime-Fighting Tool In Sleepy Hollow: Texts

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – There's a new way to report crime anonymously in Sleepy Hollow: texting.

Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Gregory Camp announced Wednesday that residents can now send anonymous tips to the Police Department using a text message, iPhone app, Android app or online.

“This service is being provided to report information regarding non-urgent illegal activity,” Camp said in his release. “Anyone encountering a crime in progress should dial 911 or call the department.”

Police are now using TipSoft, a service that allows people to send anonymous, encrypted messages to police. The service is designed to protect the identity of the tipster. Police say residents should use TipSoft to report unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, sale and distribution of drugs or crimes in the planning stage.

Dangerous conditions such as potholes or missing signs should be reported by dialing 914-631-0800

To use TipSoft online, residents can log-in to tipsoft.com or tipsubmit.com, selecting the Sleepy Hollow Police Department.

Texts can be sent to CRIMES (274637). Residents should include “SHPDTIPS” in their texts. Standard text message fees apply.

Smartphone users can download apps for Android and the iPhone by searching for TipSoft or TipSubmit. Select “Sleepy Hollow” as the agency when setting up the app.

“Sleepy Hollow is demonstrating its commitment to the public and to public safety by using technology to prevent, reduce and solve crime,” William Kilmer, CEO of PublicEngines, said in a news release. PublicEngines is the company behind TipSoft. “With TipSoft, agencies can invite the public to take an active role in making their communities safer.”
