Speights, 20, was stabbed to death while trying to break up a fight during a large New Year's Eve party on Jan.1, 2016, in the Town of Crawford, said the recordonline.

The grand jury charged Jauntae Brown, 20, with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence and misdemeanor weapon possession, added the recordonline.

Speights, a Town of Wallkill resident, was a tight end/defensive end for Pine Bush HS who graduated in 2014, was hailed a hero for his efforts.

Following his death, the Silver Lake's Fire Department said in a statement: "In his humble demeanor, Justin would always be one of the first to step up to the plate no matter what the task was."

A trial date has not been set. Brown remains in the Orange County Jail without bail.
