Manuel Carlos DePenna, 58, of Bulverde, Texas, sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the state police.

The crash occurred when a 2014 Honda with New York license plates traveling in the left lane changed to the center lane, striking a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze with Connecticut plates, which then slammed into a 2016 Ford Focus with Connecticut plates that was traveling in the same lane in front of them, state police said.

After the crash, the Honda began to rotate counter-clockwise. DePenna was a backseat passenger in the Honda, state police said.

The crash is being investigated by the State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.
