Michael P. Thorpe was arrested on Monday after New York State Police received a call from teachers and officials at the child's school who were concerned about the abuse, said Trooper AJ Hicks.

School officials told police that the injuries sustained by the 7-year-old happened outside of the school, Hicks said.

Thorpe, who is a convicted felon, was charged with felony assault and endangering the welfare of a child, Hicks said.

He was arraigned before the town of Washington Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Thorpe is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 24.

State police did not release the name of the school.
