After visiting a friend in Bayside, Queens, Sherri Orofino left for her home in Dutchess County after 3 a.m. on March 3, 1987, driving a black 1987 Toyota MR-2 (similar to the one shown in the phpto above).

That day, state police were contacted by Orofino's husband who stated that she hadn’t arrived home. During the course of the investigation, troopers learned that Orofino’s abandoned vehicle was located by Yorktown Police Department off of the Taconic State Parkway on Route 134 in Yorktown Heights.

Six months after her disappearance, on Aug. 9, 1987, Sherri’s skeletal remains were found scattered in a densely-wooded area near the Croton Reservoir. Her body had decomposed and no apparent cause of death could be determined.

Sherri Orofino was a white female, with long blonde hair who weighed approximately 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a yellow blouse over a black tank top, black jeans and a black jacket.

Numerous leads have been followed-up on by state police throughout its investigation, but the homicide has never been solved. Investigators continue to comb the Croton Reservoir area searching for clues that may bring closure to the Orofino family.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Investigator Timothy Gleason of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Cortlandt by calling (914) 737-7171.
