Police said that the three cars involved in the accident were all in the left lane when traffic slowed down. The car in front, a Honda Accord, and the middle car, a Toyota Camry, came to abrupt stops. The third car in line, a Subaru Forester, failed to stop in time and slammed into the back of the Camry, which was then pushed forward into the back of the Accord, police said.

Savage was a passenger in the Camry, which was being driven by a Kittery, Maine woman who turns 29 years old on Saturday. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.

Savage was sitting in the back seat and wearing a seatbelt, according to the state police report.

The driver of the Forester, a 28-year-old man from Freeport, Maine, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident is under investigation, police said.
