This is leaf-collection season. It’s so easy and inexpensive to mulch your leaves instead of placing them in bags. Leaf mulching is great for lawns. There is a great website: leleny.org that has lots of information about mulching.

If you are a homeowner, you can shred them using a mulching lawn mower, a leaf shredder, a leaf vacuum/shredder or even a do-it-yourself setup using a weed whacker inside a trash can.

Leleny.org also updates its website with names and phone numbers of landscapers who mulch in place if you hire a landscaper. This year the village of Irvington joined Greenburgh and many of the villages in the town by halting loose-leaf pickups. As Mayor Brian Smith of Irvington stated, “While it might seem like we voted to cut the services that we offer our residents, I’d like to think we voted to spend your money more wisely.”

Kinds of leaf mulching equipment to use:

  • Electric mulch mower
  • Leaf shredder
  • Leaf vacuum

Encourage your landscaper to offer mulching services. Tell the landscaper to contact leleny.org so the website can publicize the good work the company does for the environment and community.

Paul Feiner Greenburgh Town Supervisor P.S.: Leaf mulching is catching on. I’m pleased that Greenburgh was one of the first localities in Westchester to actively promote mulching. Our next big initiative: promoting organic recycling. Had a great meeting with representatives of the Greenburgh Nature Center, School Lunch Recycling (www.schoollunchrecycling.com), school officials from the town and village officials.

We’re going to work very hard rolling out a plan to encourage students, businesses and the community to take the next steps and support organic recycling. We could reduce the amount of waste and garbage by 30 percent. This will be a major initiative of the town. I will be recommending in my 2015 budget that the town contract with the nature center to organize the organic recycling initiative.
