Sister Susan Murphy, 90, Of Tarrytown, Former School Principal

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Sister Susan Murphy, formerly known as Sister Pius, 90, of Tarrytown, died Friday, March 20.

She was born in New York City to Patrick and Catherine Connaughton Murphy.

In 1950, Murphy joined the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown.

She taught at Academy of the Sacred Heart in New York City, St. Andrew's School in Sag Harbor, and St. Joseph's School in Garden City.

She was principal of St. Mary's School in Long Island City and St. Anne's School in Garden City.

Murphy worked with postulants and novices at the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Novitiate in Tarrytown.

She served on the pastoral staff of St. Benedict Joseph Labre Parish in Richmond Hill, and volunteered with various groups in the Richmond Hill area.

Murphy moved to the Marymount Convent in Tarrytown in 2009, where she was living at the time of her death.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, and members of her religious community.

Four sisters, including her twin, Sister Mary Catherine Paraclitus Murphy, preceded her in death.

Calling hours will be 3-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Ave., Tarrytown.

A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the convent.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Marymount Convent.

Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, 50 Wilson Park Drive, Tarrytown, NY, 10591.
