Sister Rita Arthur, 84, Of Tarrytown

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Sister Rita (Sister Robert) Arthur, RSHM, died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on Friday, Jan. 16\. She was 84.

She was born in Logansport, Ind. on July 20, 1930, to Robert and Mary Grady Arthur. She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) in Tarrytown, N.Y. in 1948, and took the name Sister Robert.

She taught at Marymount Secondary School, Tarrytown, N.Y. and was a teacher, dean of students, superior of the religious community, and director of the Student Abroad Program at Marymount College, Tarrytown. She was also principal of Mother Butler Memorial High School, the Bronx; dean of women and vice-president of Marymount Manhattan College, New York City; and was the first RSHM's non-governmental organization representative at the United Nations.

She served on the boards of trustees of Marymount Manhattan College; Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles; and Marymount School of New York. 

She is survived by her sister, Loretta Land; numerous nieces and nephews; and the members of her religious community.

She was predeceased by two sisters; and two brothers. Services will be at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Ave. in Tarrytown, with a wake on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and a vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial is on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m.
