Sister Joan (Catherwood) Regis, 88, Tarrytown Resident

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Tarrytown resident Sister Joan Regis Catherwood, died on Monday, May 2. She was 88.

She was born Joan M. Catherwood in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 6, 1927, to William and Suzette Tuohy Catherwood.

She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown in 1949. 

She spent 21 years in education at Marymount, Rome, Italy; at Marymount College, Tarrytown; at St. Lawrence School, North Miami Beach, Fla.; and Marymount School of New York. 

She spent a year in Vietnam with Catholic War Relief Services and for 20 years worked as a paralegal in the New York City area. 

After retiring from work as a paralegal, she began a ministry of volunteer work and worked part-time in recruitment for Lynn University.

She is survived by a brother, John T. Catherwood, and sister-in-law, Martha Catherwood. 

She was predeceased by a brother, William S. Catherwood.

Services will be held at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Ave., in Tarrytown. 

The wake will take place on Thursday, May 5, from 3-7:30 p.m., with the Vigil Service beginning at 7:30 p.m. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m., at Mount Calvary Cemetery, in White Plains. 

In lieu of flowers, gifts in her name may be made to Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, 50 Wilson Park Drive, Tarrytown, NY, 1059.
