Saverio 'Sam' Amato, 80, Sleepy Hollow Carpenter

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Saverio "Sam" N. Amato of Sleepy Hollow died Nov. 22 after a prolonged battle with heart disease. He was 80.

A lifelong resident of Elm Street, Amato was a carpenter belonging to Local 149 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in Tarrytown. His three brothers also belonged to the union, and they all worked on many commercial and private structures throughout New York and Tarrytown over the past 75 years.

Amato served in the Army in Germany and spoke often of his adventures while traveling throughout Europe, his family said.

Never married, Amato was very close to his family. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Irene Amato of Sleepy Hollow; and three nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Saverio; a sister, Mary; his mother, Marie Marzella; and three brothers, Morris, Nick and William.

Services were held Monday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Phelps Memorial Hospital, Fifth Floor, Cardiac Care Unit.
