Philip F. Fossa, 89, Longtime Tarrytown Teacher

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Philip F. Fossa died  Wednesday, March 19, at the age of 89.

He was born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Philip and Mary (Moran) Fossa.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University and a doctorate from the University of Genoa in Italy. He was a teacher of Latin, French and Italian at the high school level and Russian and Italian at SUNY Albany.

After he retired from teaching in the Public Schools in Tarrytown, N.Y., Fossa continued his language studies for many years at the College of Saint Rose in Albany and at Middlebury College in Vermont. He enjoyed the opera and classical music and was an avid reader and bridge player.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Albany.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church, West Springfield, Mass., on Friday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
