Mary Joan Cannoles, 81, Of Sleepy Hollow, Retired General Motors Secretary

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. - Mary Joan (Shroba) Cannoles of Sleepy Hollow died Saturday, Oct. 12. She was 81.

Cannoles was born Jan. 7, 1932, in Pocantico Hills, to Stephen and Mary (Fetch) Shroba. She was raised in North Tarrytown and graduated from Pocantico Hills Central School in 1948 and North Tarrytown High School in 1952. She worked as a secretary to the traffic manager at General Motors for more than 30 years, retiring April 1, 1983.

Cannoles was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Ladies Sokol Lodge No. 42W, serving as president from 2000 to 2009. She was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Senior Citizens as well as the Transfiguration Church Senior Citizens. She did volunteer work in past years for the American Diabetes Association, Lower Hudson Valley Chapter. She was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Cross until it closed in April 2007. Most recently, she was a parishioner of Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown.

Cannoles is survived by her stepson, Gordon L. Cannoles II (Connie); step-daughter, Martha Pauling; and five step-grandchildren, all of Arlington, Texas; sister-in-law, Roseanna Shroba; nieces, nephews; and many great-nieces and -nephews. She was predeceased by her parents;  husband, Gordon; brothers, John, Joseph, Vincent, William; babies, Stephen and Stephen; sister, Alice; and nephew, Vincent Paul Shroba.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 a.m. at Coffey Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Transfiguration Church with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
