SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. John J. Vizvary, a lifelong Sleepy Hollow resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 11. He was 84.
Vizvary was born Dec. 3, 1927, in North Tarrytown to John A. and Mary Ovadek Vizvary. He graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1945 and served in the Navy during World War II, earning the rank of seaman first class.
Vizvary later worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1979 after 32 years. He was a parishioner of St. Teresa of Avila Church and a member of the Sleepy Hollow Seniors, Knights of Columbus St. Elmo Council 318 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1042.
Vizvary was also an associate member of Riverside Hose Co. 4 of the Tarrytown Fire Department. He was an avid golfer and shared his love of the game with many of his friends.
He is survived by a sister, Rose "Gig" Vizvary, of Durango, Colo.; and nine nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Emil; and a sister, Mary Baskiel.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow. Burial will follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
