Helen B. DeMilia, Sleepy Hollow Resident, 87

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Helen B. DeMilia, a lifelong Sleepy Hollow resident, died Monday, Jan. 5, at age 87.

Born in North Tarrytown on Jan. 16, 1927, she was the daughter of Charles and Anna Varga Koval. She attended North Tarrytown High School.

On March 3, 1945, she married Joseph A. DeMilia in Holy Cross Church. DeMilia was a devoted parishioner of Holy Cross Church where she served on the Parish Council and as president of the Altar and Rosary Society.

DeMilia was a member of the Sleepy Hollow seniors where she had served as both vice president and president and was a member of the Rescue Hose Ladies Auxiliary. No matter what the event or function was, DeMilia could be found in the kitchen where she loved taking charge.

She is survived by her sons Joseph A. (Molly) DeMilia, Jr. of Carmel and John Charles of Sleepy Hollow. Also surviving are her grandchildren Donna, Joseph and David (Kim) and her great-granddaughter Grace.

DeMilia was one of 15 children and is survived by her sister Catherine Vasko of Schenectady, N.Y.

Her husband, Joseph, died in 1997.

She also was predeceased by her siblings Michael, Joseph, Charles, John, George, William, Edward, Walter, Joseph, Anna and Agnes Koval, Marie Handzo and Dorothy Capossela.

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Avila Church on Friday at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
