TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - Bernard "Bernie" Augustus Browne of Tarrytown died Aug. 12. He was 91.
Browne was born April 24, 1923, to Margaret (McGee) and William Martin Browne, in the Bronx. He went to grammar school in the parish of the Sacred Heart, then attended Manhattan Preparatory School, the University of Vermont and Manhattan College where he earned a B.S. Degree. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and saw active duty in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked for Ayerst Laboratories as a salesman. After marriage he lived in Hartford with his wife, and then moved to Washington Township, New Jersey and Wauwatosa, Wisc., , before finally settling in Tarrytown. After leaving sales, he worked at Ayerst in various management roles in marketing.
After retirement, he volunteered at the New York Botanical Garden and the Tarrytown Traffic Commission. He was a member for 50 years of Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown, and in later years was a member of the Tarrytown Seniors.
Browne is survived by his wife, Ersilia Browne; children, Kathleen Browne of East Walpole, Mass., Brian Browne of Portland, Maine, William Browne of Hamptonville, N.C., and Rosemary Cerbone of Tarrytown; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; sisters, Noel Magyra of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Gloria Healy of Manhattan; a niece and a nephew. He was predeceased by his sisters, Emily, Margaret and Anastasia "Peace" Donahue; and brother, William Browne.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at Dwyer-Vanderbilt Funeral Home, North Broadway, Tarrytown. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at Transfiguration Church on South Broadway, Tarrytown. Interment will be at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, following Mass.
