The program includes paid nine-month internships for college-age women and men who wish to take a gap- year either before or during college and is designed to increase the number of future leaders on social issues impacting women in Westchester County.

Interns will receive training in feminist leadership practices and will use those skills to address social issues affecting women in Westchester. Issue areas and organizational needs will be defined by the WWA, and interns will be supervised by the Eileen Fisher Community Foundation in collaboration with WWA member agencies.

Interns will work with at-risk populations, including victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, families in need of affordable child care, medically under-served communities needing health education and women seeking economic self-sufficiency through small business development. Interns will be chosen through a formal application process, supervised by the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute.

“The perceived absence of viable networking and career-building opportunities for young leaders leads them to move away from the county after college graduation." said Antoinette Klatzky, chair of the WWA and program officer for the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute. "The gap-year internship program will allow future leaders to explore possible career paths and to build relationships with local leaders on issues of concern to women, giving them a reason to stay in the county.”

The program is also intended to demonstrate the value of a gap-year program in improving college and career choices of future leaders and to provide WWA member agencies with increased capacity to help women and girls in Westchester County. Start-up funding for the program is being provided by a matching grant from the Elias Foundation, matching funds from the Eileen Fisher Community Foundation and additional support from Eileen Fisher Inc. WWA member agencies have also contributed support for the program.

Applications are available through the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute. For more information, call 914-487-3354 or email info@EFLI-LIFE.org.
