TARRYTOWN, N.Y. David Neilsen said his daughter inspired the idea to use reading as a way to raise money. She told him that she wished there was a job where she could earn money just by reading books all day.
Neilsen and the rest of the Elementary Parent-Teacher Association of the Tarrytowns will take that idea and put it to good use on Saturday, when they team up with Warner Library to raise money for the Children's Room.
It seemed a natural fit, Neilsen said, noting 100 percent of the proceeds from the event will be given to Warner Library, which he described as a great resource for the community in general.
The second annual Read-a-Thon will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Children's Room at Warner Library in Tarrytown. Kids in grades kindergarten through fifth grade can come and read or hear others read.
Neilsen said the event would also include autographed copies of children's and young adult book, as well as crafts. Volunteers, including teachers and Sleepy Hollow High School students, will be bringing their own books to read to the participating kids as well and share their love of books, Neilsen said.
When organizers first planned the Read-a-Thon, Neilsen said the idea was this was going to be such a miserable January day with snow piled high outside. The wintery conditions outside would be perfect for a cozy afternoon of reading inside.
It may not be snowing on Saturday, but Neilsen said the event should be a lot of fun.
