Two people out for a night ride on a jet ski had to be rescued on Thursday, according to the Hastings Police Department.

The rescue began when the police department received a call from the U.S. Coast Guard around 10:17 p.m. reported they had received a report of an overturned vessel in the Hudson River near the Pioneer Boat Club, said Lt David Dosin

The department's marine unit was activated and Sgt. Anthony Gentile and Officer Justin Bottiglieri responded to the area to search for the vessel, he said.

The Yonkers Police Emergency Service Unit, Westchester County Police Aviation Unit, and the Coast Guard responded as well.

The Hastings officers found two people wearing life jackets floating in the completely dark river with cold temperatures, he added.

Gentile and Bottiglieri brought the two back to shore at the JFK Marina in Yonkers. Officers from the Yonkers Police Emergency Unit assisted with medical aid.

After an investigation, it was determined that the two were riding a jet ski at night in the Hudson River when an accident occurred. The heavily damaged jet ski was towed to the Tower Ridge Yacht Club by Yonkers Marine Service. It was also determined the victims were floating in the Hudson River for an extended period, possibly for more than two hours, said Dosin.

Dosin said that communication on the river was not great and that Desk Sgt. John Deblasio along with Officers Mike Gregorio and Sam Brecker did an exceptional job by relaying key information to the Marine Unit while the search was being conducted.
