TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – The New York State Thruway Authority has a plan to beet winter weather this season.
In addition to traditional rock salt, the Thruway Authority plans to pre-treat its 570-mile highway system with a sugar beet juice and brine mixture.
“Motorists throughout New York State and beyond know that they can depend on Thruway staff to maintain safe driving conditions, even in tough winter weather conditions,” Chairman Howard Milstein said. “Using the beet brine mixture to pre-treat roadways is just one example of how the Thruway Authority maintains one of America’s safest and most reliable superhighways even as we find new and better ways to control costs.”
Officials praised the beet pre-treatment mixture saying it is an effective way to prevent icing while reducing overtime work because it can be done during normal work hours.
The Thruway Authority estimates it will use 180,000 tons of rock sale, 175,000 gallons of salt brine and 50,000 gallons of beet-brine mixture this year to keep roads safe. More than 600 workers will also use more than 200 plows to clear roads of snow this season.
