Thruway Authority Promotes Safe Labor Day Driving

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – New York State Thruway officials are urging motorists to drive safely during the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

“Labor Day Weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, as motorists head out to enjoy the last days of summer, family celebrations and barbecues,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas Madison said. “Whether it’s a last minute trip to your favorite fishing spot on a lake or a trip to the ocean beaches, be alert, drive without distractions. Avoid texting while driving and speeding through construction zones.”

More than 2.6 million cars drove on the New York State Thruway during last year's Labor Day weekend. State officials said they expect the busiest section of the Thruway to be the Tappan Zee Bridge Corridor between Rockland and Westchester counties.

Delays are also expected at toll barriers in New Rochelle. State Police Sgt. Thomas Ferritto said police would be “out in full force” during the holiday weekend.

“We can’t repeat it enough, buckle up and properly secure children age 4 and under in a child safety seat, and use only hands-free cell phones,” he said. “We will be looking for motorists creating hazardous driving conditions, including speeding and driving while intoxicated.”
