TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The Bard is coming to Patriots Park again.
Students in the Tarrytown YMCAs summer youth programs are preparing for the eighth annual Shakespeare in the Park festival. Two groups of young actors will put on free performances of MacBeth and Twelfth Night in Patriots Park this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The culmination of the four-week camps is actually the performances in the park, said Barbara Turk, vice president of marketing and community development at the YMCA.
Student actors in the YMCAs summer programs were divided into two camps: a youth camp for kids in grades two through six and a teen camp for kids in grades six through 12. The youth camp is performing three showings of MacBeth this year. The teen camp will put on six performances of Twelfth Night.
Turk said the Twelfth Night productions were double-cast so that each camper would perform a lead role in one production and then a slightly smaller role in another.
What makes it unique this year is we have a live jazz band playing on stage with the production, Turk said.
A Y Theatre Arts camp for youths and teens also participated in the Shakespeare festival by making costumes and sets. The YMCAs Peter Royston is directing the productions. Roystons childhood friend Peter Nissen has composed original music for the jazz band, Turk said.
