She’s a “Tarrytown Tinker,” who works out regularly with a group of 20 local women, ages 24-64. The group includes young moms, professionals, cancer fighters and caregivers who serve as health and fitness soul sisters. As a celebration and “joyful goodbye to breast cancer,” Chillemi ran her first marathon in 2012 with sister Liz Garro and her daughter, Cathy, and together they raised $15,000 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
From that point on, a fire was lit and the “Tarrytown Tinkers” were born. Three current Tinkers participated in the More/Fitness/Shape marathon this year for the first time and the group’s mileage was tracked to donate to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society again, but this time, in honor of Tinker Sue Duell’s late husband, Paul, who recently died.
“He fought both leukemia and lymphoma valiantly,” said Chillemi. “I continue to be an advocate that even with cancer challenges, life is full of being in the moment.” Chillemi used the Jeff Galloway Run Walk method to complete the race. “I may not be fast, but I always finish with a smile."
Duell was among first-time Tinkers who joyfully linked arms as they crossed the 13.1-mile finish line.
“She accused me of trying to kill her after the first loop,” Chillemi said.
