Officials are encouraging people to stock up on foodstuffs, charge their cell phones and put away loose outdoor items in case of a major storm hitting the area on Monday.

“At this time the storm is several days away from impacting the area and conditions can change,” a villagewide email from Irvington officials read. “We need to be prepared in advance.”

Hurricane Sandy is moving up the East Coast from the Bahamas and significant impacts from the storm could be felt as early as Sunday and last through Tuesday, the National Weather Service said Friday afternoon. The storm could bring significant coastal flooding, several inches of rain and strong, gusty winds, although meteorologists at the National Weather Service say specific impacts ultimately depend on how Sandy will interact with a “deepening upper level low pressure system approaching the East Coast.”

Sleepy Hollow officials have issued a preparation checklist for residents and reminded residents to call the Sleepy Hollow Police Department to report fallen trees, downed power lines and flooding.

Irvington officials say there is no plan to evacuate at this time and no shelters are available. Residents are advised to shelter-in-place as the storm approaches.
