Mimi Godwin and JoAnne Murray thanked the Hope Hose Fire Dept. and Conqueror Fire Dept. for being the mastermind behind the Rubber Duck Derby. Eight years ago, when Godwin brought the idea to the club, it was Gerry Barbelet and Tom Basher that brought it to the Fire Department, to come up with a way to make this happen.
After they decided that Patriot’s Park’s Andre Stream was the best location, it was Chief Joey McCarthy (who died in 2011) that came up with the first guillotine to hold back the water in the stream to make for a swift and exciting rubber duck derby. Since that time, all the volunteers from the fire department have turned out to perfect the race.
Chief Kelly Murphy and Fred Gross accepted the award. The Tarrytown Ambulance Corp provide a safe place for the costumed ducks to rest between races, making sure they are hydrated.
Godwin noted how hot it is in the costumes and without hydration between races, the costumed ducks would not survive. Kimmel was given the Best emcee award. Kimmel accepted the award and thanked the costumed ducks for entertaining the crowds during the event.
