Tarrytown Community Center Opens Hurricane Sandy Shelter

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – A 24-shelter is being set up at the Community Opportunity Center of Tarrytown to help residents who have lost power or heat because of Hurricane Sandy.

A few Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow residents made their way to the Community Opportunity Center in Tarrytown on Wednesday as a shelter opened.

The center wants to make sure “people have a safe place to go,” WestCop area Director Kristin Lanza said.

The Wildey Street center will be open through the rest of the week and volunteers will be offering water, food and free Wi-Fi to any resident who comes. Lanza said the center will soon be getting cots and blankets.

The center will also offer entertainment for kids, including crafts, games and kid-friendly DVDs. Volunteers with the center's Westchester Circus Arts program are also helping out, making a big batch of soup for residents who show up to the shelter, Lanza said.

Officials from West Nyack are planning to provide transportation to the Tarrytown center, Lanza said, as many homes there have been flooded and are without power.
