Sleepy Hollow Students Excel At Science, Engineering Fair

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Sleepy Hollow High School students competed in and won honors at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, after countless hours of preparing with their high school science research instructors Janet Longo-Abinanti and Michele Zielinski.

Four hundred and fifty students from 35 schools participated in the event, with two of Sleepy Hollow’s students being named finalists in the competition.

Junior Dominique Marchini and senior Elizabeth Sobolik were named finalists and awarded first place with a $100 prize. Senior Austen Paris was also awarded first place with the $100 prize.

As finalists, Marchini, and Sobolik, will present their work at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2015 in Pittsburgh in May.

The following students also won awards at the competition:

Second place - $50: Elizabeth Silver – cell biology; Julia Komorowski – behavior; Catherine Brennan – Earth science.

Third place - $25: Javiera Morales – environment; Heather Brown – biochemistry; Colin Atkinson – computer science; Clare Johnson – animal science; Daniel Moriarty – behavior; Emily Thayer – medicine and health.

Special Awards: Colin Atkinson – Intel Excellence in Computer Science $200; Catherine Brennan – Women's Geoscientist Award; Bethany Christian – Mianus River Gorge Ecology Award $25; Emily Comas – Cornell University Food Science Award $50; Sara Friedman – Future of Medicine Award $50; Katherine Kachnowski – Fisher Scientific Award $25; Javiera Morales – Diversity Achievement Award $50; Isabella Salerni – Samuel Klasburn Award $50; Sonya Smith – Fisher Scientific Award $25; Tom Sobolik – ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative $50;David Friedman- ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative $50; Griffin Gebler – Cornell University Food Science Award $50; Cassidy Higgins – Phillips Award for Exceptional Research $25; Viktoriya Molchanova – Phillips Award for Exceptional Research $25; Dominique Marchini – US Metric Association Award; Caroline Murphy – Fisher Scientific Award $25; Elizabeth Silver – In vitro Biology Award.
