SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Ash Wednesday is about repentance.
Repentance is a call to conversion, and that's a very big name for change, the Rev. Louis Mazza said. Change your life around for Christ.
Mazza heads the Immaculate Conception Church in Sleepy Hollow. His church, along with several other churches in the area, celebrated the beginning of Lent on Wednesday. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the ashes that are placed on members' foreheads.
Mazza said the ash represents sin and is a symbol that we need God's forgiveness.
Ash Wednesday is a day which all Christians remember how Christ died for our sins, and now we are sorry, Mazza said. The beautiful word: repentance; for repentance means a real desire to change your life from what is evil and terrible and not in God's eyes.
Mazza said change is seen by removing yourself from sin.
Start doing good: the good you've been neglecting by the sins holding you back, he said. Start doing good to your neighbor. Start doing good to yourself and to family and those near you. Start doing good to the world.
