SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. The Sleepy Hollow High School Pep Band has come up with a new way for alumni to cheer on the Horsemen at Saturday's game against Ossining: joining the band for a few songs.
The pep band has extended an invitation to former students to dust off their instruments and perform during the rivalry football game, even if they haven't played in a few years. Alumni who'd like to play with the band, but feel they're a little rusty, can stop by the band room behind Kusel Auditorium at noon on Saturday for some extra practice.
Michah Sprague, high school band director, came up with the idea over the summer as a way for current students to connect with alumni from the band's 40-year tenure. Sprague said he picked the Ossining game because, It's a rivalry that was really big in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Sprague said three alumni have already committed themselves and he's hoping more will show up on Saturday.
In addition to building connections, the invitation is also a chance for them to see the new facilities and what generous community support has done, Sprague said.
Kick-off for Saturday's game is at 2:30 p.m. The pep band will start rehearsal at 1 p.m.
The Sleepy Hollow Pep Band consists of 71 students who play wind and brass instruments. The band is student-run and conducted by two captains, Marina Tramontelli and Robert Dondiego. Sprague assists with coordination and picking out music.
Sprague said the pep band's repertoire includes everything from classic fight songs to classic rock and modern pop songs. The band will be playing Cee Lo Green's Forget You and an arrangement of Jump on It along with standard football game songs this year.
