Sleepy Hollow Group Collects Thanksgiving Turkeys For Families In Need

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining and Sleepy Hollow nonprofits are flocking together to collect dozens of Thanksgiving turkeys in the hopes of making the holiday a little brighter for families in need.

According to one organizer, the coalition consists of the nonprofit Gullotta House, Ossining’s Interact Club and Interfaith Council for Action (ICFA); Sleepy Hollow's Community Action Program (CAP); the Landmark Diner in Ossining, and county Legislator Catherine Borgia, D-Ossining.

So far, they have rounded up 87 of the 130 frozen birds they plan to distribute, Matthew Gullotta said Thursday.

Donated turkeys can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from now until Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Landmark Diner, 265 S. Highland Ave. (Route 9).

Gullotta said he and a group of local high school students just collected $400 in cash (to buy turkeys) and a bunch of birds while stationed in front of the Stop & Shop on Route 9 in Ossining.

Gullotta said his crew of volunteers will be back at the same Stop & Shop from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 20, to accept donations.

The diner itself is hosting a free Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 22, for families in need, or those that just need a break.

Families and individuals must to be “recommended” to partake of the holiday meal, Gullotta said.

To make recommendations, email Gullotta at gullottahouse@gmail.com by Monday, Nov. 21.

Reservations are necessary because the diner only has room for 45 people at a sitting.

When calling to make recommendations, give Gullotta the family’s or individual’s name, the number of people in the party, and the time they would like to attend.

There are five seatings: 5:30-6:15 p.m., 6:15-7 p.m., 7 p.m.-7:45 p.m., 7:45 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and 8:30-9:15 p.m.

Gullotta said his organization’s mission is to provide food vouchers to struggling residents, scholarships to help pay for education and to support to other community organizations.
