Sleepy Hollow Expanding RiverWalk Park In August

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow residents will get a taste of a new waterfront park in August.

The village and General Motors have reached an agreement that will open up the vacant lot along the Hudson River for three Sundays in August. The move will connect existing RiverWalk parks in Horan's Landing and Kingsland Point Park.

“Park to Park Days will give us all a taste of what is to come, when the GM site is developed and these beautiful riverfront parks will be connected permanently,” Trustee Susan MacFarlane said.

The General Motors site and its waterfront access is usually closed to the public. The site is sometimes used for parking during large events in Kingsland Point Park or near the waterfront, such as the Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon. The village also stores several Department of Public Works vehicles in the fenced-in lot.

An anticipated redevelopment of the General Motors site includes adding a RiverWalk park along the waterfront.

General Motors has agreed to open a portion of the site to residents and visitors on Aug. 5, Aug. 9 and Sept. 9. The walkway will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Access will be available from existing waterfront walking paths in Horan's Landing and Kingsland Point Park.

Village officials note that both August dates feature tours of the Tarrytown Lighthouse at Kingsland Point Park between 1 and 3 p.m. The Sept. 9 date coincides with the Sleepy Hollow Street Fair.

Village trustees praised the upcoming event.

“I think it's a great idea,” Trustee Barbara Carr said after approving the agreement. Trustee Bruce Campbell agreed.

It's “another small step toward taking the walkway all the way along the river,” he said.
