Sleepy Hollow Duracell Cleanup Set to Start April

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow residents will begin to see signs of Duracell remediation in April.

Contractors will begin mobilizing the general staging area in April with initial remediation beginning for the initial group of properties in May, according to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) spokesperson Lisa King.

“The anticipated duration of this remedial action is difficult to quantify given the variables that will be encountered on each of the affected properties and the constraints under which this cleanup work must be performed,” King said. “Cleanup of the affected properties will be carried out as expeditiously as possible.”

The DEC said 78 homes will need to be remediated based on a soil investigation involving about 2,000 samples from 146 properties in the village. Duracell's successor Gillette is responsible for the cleanup, with the DEC supervising the process.

The plan to clean up pollution will begin on the block adjacent to the former battery site, bounded by Andrews Lane, Elm Street, Kendal Avenue and Beekman Avenue, and spread out from there.

Although remediation of individual properties will be personalized, King said the process could be broken down into four steps: gathering necessary permits from the village and county, preparing the site for remediation by establishing erosion and dust suppression controls, setting up temporary fencing and barriers, relocating site features during the process, removing soil with excess mercury levels and site restoration, including landscaping.

Residents who will need to take precautions while their properties are being cleaned will be advised by the DEC. King stressed that the safety of all residents is important.

“The safety of the surrounding community is of paramount importance and all activities planned during this remedial action will be performed ensuring the safety of the residents,” King said.
