Sleepy Hollow Considers Junior Ambulance Corps

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow teenagers can already become junior firefighters in the village, but soon they may be able to join the ranks of the Sleepy Hollow Ambulance Corps.

Captain Shelly Glover says a recent round of interviews included a couple of teenagers who are under 18 and too young to officially join the corps. Glover said they did such a great job, she wants to find a way to let them get involved.

“The young members that were interviewed by the board and by Anthony were spectacular,” she said. “They had initiative, they had goals, and we'd like to incorporate them into the Corps to develop them and ultimately to build us a stronger corps in the future.”

The Sleepy Hollow Ambulance Corps has been holding interviews for new members after it was disbanded and reorganized a few months ago. Glover and Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio presented a list of eight candidates who had successful interviews recently, including two who will be nominated to a junior corps, during Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting.

Mayor Ken Wray said he liked the idea of having a junior ambulance corps.

“I think having a youth corps, if it records as successful as the fire department, would be terrific,” he said.

The village board is expected to approve the candidates for membership in the Ambulance Corps at their next meeting in January. Giaccio noted that only one of the candidates had EMT training, so most of them would be drivers.

“We're really in need of EMTs to volunteer,” Giaccio said, adding that the Corps would encourage members to take EMT training once they join.

Giaccio said the village was still looking for willing volunteers.

“We're still interviewing,” he said. “So if anyone is interested in interviewing, contact me and we'll set up another round of interviews.”
