SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. The Salvation Army is once again pursuing a major expansion plan to build a new community center and chapel in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
The center and chapel would be on the site of the former Frank Chevrolet car dealership, and parking would be created where its current building now stands.
"The new facility will offer the type of services that one would find at typical centers," said Michael Stein, who works for Hudson Engineering. He presented the organization's plans to the Sleepy Hollow Planning Board last week.
The Salvation Army wants to construct a 15,000-square-foot chapel large enough for 150 people on the Sleepy Hollow site, Stein said. The building would also include multipurpose rooms and classrooms.
The organization is still buying the building, Stein said. The building, which sits in both Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, would be razed once the center and chapel were complete. The Salvation Army would use the site for 31 parking spaces and do landscaping, he said.
The organization is looking for Sleepy Hollow to name itself as the lead agency on the project because the new building would be located entirely in the village, Stein said. However, the project would also need site plan approval from Tarrytown because the parking lot would be in its jurisdiction.
