Rough Rides Abound After Brutal Winter Takes Toll On Westchester Roads

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- From Pound Ridge to Mount Vernon, and Pleasantville to Harrison, motorists do not have to travel far to find tire-damaging potholes.

State Department of Transportation crews shut two of three lanes of Interstate 684 down about noon Friday near Exit 3 (Armonk and Bedford).

Daily Voice cruised local roadways throughout the county last week, and easily found many obvious culprits.

Elected officials blame a harsh winter, and depleted public works budgets, for the slower-than-normal response to filling potholes. And sometimes, they blame the state for not fixing perpetually bumpy roads such as Route 120.

Route 120 remains rough throughout the town of Harrison near Westchester County Airport. It's also peppered with potholes in Chappaqua and Millwood. There is a tire-killing pothole as motorists descend King Street in the village of Chappaqua.

On Friday, state Department of Transportation crews were busy shutting down two of three lanes of Interstate 684 northbound, near Exit 3 (Bedford/Armonk), to fill potholes. Stop-and-go lunch-hour traffic was backed up south to the County Airport exit due to the state's ongoing pothole repair work.

Some of the roughest roadways in the county include Pleasantville Road in Briarcliff, Marble Avenue in Pleasantville, Route 22 and Central Westchester Parkway in North Castle and North White Plains, North Street near St. Vincent's Hospital and the Westchester County Club in Harrison as well as closer to the village at Crystal Street, and much of Halstead Avenue in Harrison.

There also are some deep tire-mashers near The Westchester shopping mall in White Plains.

Daily Voice readers flagged other problem spots throughout the county, including:

Route 172 in Bedford and Pound Ridge, Dale Avenue in Ossining, Lexington Avenue and Amazon Road in Mohegan Lake, and where Kisco Avenue meets Croton Lake Road in Mount Kisco.

Also, along Route 100 and Route 202 in Somers, especially Route 202 southbound past Croton Falls Road; Roaring Brook Road in Chappaqua between the Metro- North crossing and Horace Greeley High School; Stanley Avenue and Lawrence Street in Dobbs Ferry, and Lawrence Street in Ardsley.

In Mount Vernon, MacQuesten Parkway at the Fleetwood Train Station is full of potholes and Grand Street uphill from MacQuesten Parkway.

Palmer Avenue from Larchmont into New Rochelle, Weaver Street in Larchmont from Boston Post Road to Quaker Ridge Road.

Last but not least, in New Rochelle, Beachmont going west from Iona College, and Pinebrook Boulevard both sides up to Overhill Road. Also, the intersection of Sussex and Quaker Ridge Road to Wilmot Road.
