Police End 10-Hour Hostage Standoff In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers authorities ended a reported hostage situation in a Park Avenue apartment complex with the arrest of a local man on Tuesday morning, police said.

Members of Yonkers Police Department Emergency Service Unit (ESU) made entry into the apartment and took the suspect into custody without incident and with no injuries were reported at approximately 5 a.m.

Probation officers were trying to get access into the apartment to speak with a male suspect in relation to an order of protection out of Yonkers Criminal Court involving a female resident, according to police.

The male was later identified as Lester Kidd, a 40-year-old male Yonkers resident. The suspect refused entry into the apartment and it also became apparent that a female was also inside of the apartment with the suspect, according to police. Other residents inside of the building were asked to leave the location by officers for safety reasons.

Initial investigation has revealed that the suspect was holding a 42-year-old female against her will inside of the apartment, police said. Additionally, there was a valid order of protection in place for the suspect to stay away from the victim.

Kidd will be charged with criminal contempt in the first degree and unlawful imprisonment in the second degree. Investigation is continuing and no further will be released at this time.

“I would like to thank the Yonkers Police Department Hostage Negotiation Team and Emergency Service Unit for bringing this incident to a successful and safe conclusion," Yonkers  Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said. "Protecting life is paramount to our department and in this case a suspect was taken into custody without incident.”
