From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., cats and kittens will be waiting for prospective owners during a free adoption day at PetSmart, 369 Tarrytown Road in Greenburgh.

It's part of a national "Clear The Shelters" effort, according to Courtney Massena of Hartsdale, a volunteer with Posh Pets Rescue.

Massena said all of the cats/kittens have been spayed/neutered, FLV and FIV negative, have received FVRCP vaccination and rabies shots -- if old enough --and will have a microchip.

Posh Pets rescues animals in need from city shelters or off the street. Until "forever homes" are found, many of Posh Pets' cats/kittens reside in a "cat room" at PetSmart or in temporary foster homes.

Some Posh Pets Rescue cats are saved from impending euthanasia at shelters in New York City. Others come from a Long Beach, N.Y. Animal Shelter, which Posh Pets began operating after Hurricane Sandy. Through its partnership with PetSmart, Posh Pets Rescue expanded into Westchester County.

While all adoption fees are waived for Saturday's "Clear The Shelters" effort, potential Posh Pet adopters are asked to fill out an online application here.
