WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Blue Ribbon panel set up by the Metropolitan Transit Authority has released a report berating Metro-North for maintenance problems and the lack of a safety culture, according to amny.com.

The panel was set up prior to the the fatal derailment in the Bronx to investigate the commuter rail after a derailment on the New Haven line that injured dozens and an extended power outage, amny.com said.

The Panel also concluded that "fundamental rebuilding" within Metro-North needs to take place, amny.com reported.

One of the problems with Metro-North is, a huge number of experienced and capable employees reached thirty years employment in the past few years and retired. Not that their replacements aren't qualified but there's no substitute for experience. Plus the old heads were Old School. Many of them came up through the ranks. It's like a friend of mine, a railroader, says, "You couldn't fool the old guys. They weren't afraid to go down in the locker room and occasionally read the troops the riot act." Now you have management people not long out of college trying to supervise older men who know the job better than the managers do.

I ride Metro-North all the time. It's still a very safe operation.

See the reference to culture? Then take the blue ribbon and hang the report writers in the public square. Blue ribbon reports are worthless because there is pressure to get recommendations, no matter how inane, to justify the work of the commission.

Gee, what a surprise. Looks like all those gigantic ticket price increases over recent years were put to good use...NOT.
