Pair of Supermarkets to Open Friday in Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Grocery shoppers will have an expanded selection when they grab their carts this weekend.

The Asian-inspired grocery store H-Mart will celebrate the grand opening of its 371 N. Central Avenue store in Hartsdale Friday with an early morning ceremony.

Across town, Stop & Shop also will open the doors of its newest location, Route 119 near the Sheraton Hotel, on Friday.

The addition of the two stores, which will double the number of Greenburgh supermarkets, gives shoppers extra options and increases the level of competition within the town, Greenburgh officials say.

H-Mart’s Hartsdale location will be the first in Westchester County and will feature an array of Asian, Western, Latin American and Caribbean products.

Government officials from as far away as South Korea will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the 37,000-square-foot space with a 9:30 a.m. ceremony.

Stop & Shop, while much more familiar to Westchester shoppers than H-Mart, is a welcome addition and has been a popular idea among residents, Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner said.

“Unlike many development application projects that experience significant opposition from the community - this supermarket had an enthusiastic group of immediate residents behind it from day one,” Feiner wrote in an email.

The 67,500-square-foot mega-store will replace Stop & Shop’s current location at the Bridge Plaza in Tarrytown.

That store soon will be replaced by a CVS/pharmacy store with an expanded convenience food department, Feiner said.
